Joining the Fight Against Multiple Myeloma
NORWALK, CT – It’s often said that there won’t ever be one cure for cancer. There will be millions. Each case is unique, and so too are the ways we can all choose to help. We work closely with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to combat pediatric cancer, and now LogicSource has another group of dedicated team members stepping up and doing all they can to fight back against Multiple Myeloma.
LogicSource Management Information Analysis Associate, Tom Kealy, and Chief Operating Officer, Jo Seed are teaming up and headed to New York City to run 13.1 miles in the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 17 to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team for Cures.
The mission of the MMRF is to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma by accelerating the development of next-generation treatments that hold the power to extend the lives of patients. Multiple Myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and, though much progress has been made in funding and research, Myeloma still has one of the lowest five-year survival rates of all cancers. Since its inception, the organization has raised over 400-million dollars and directs nearly 90% of the total funds to research and related programs.
Tom Kealy has a personal connection to the disease. “I’m really looking forward to running the NYC half-marathon on behalf of the MMRF. My family has been connected with this incredible organization for many years and we will continue to fundraise until there’s a cure,” he said. Tom’s dad, JP Kealy, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma just under five years ago. After a successful stem cell transplant in the Spring of 2017, his father is strong and healthy, but the road ahead remains long and uncertain.
As a lifelong swimmer, this 13.1-mile run may be a challenging change of environment for Tom, but it pales in comparison to the battle his father and other cancer patients fight every day. That’s why Tom’s plans to keep running won’t stop in New York. “I already have my sight locked on another MMRF event where I can continue to support this great cause,” Tom said. “I want to thank everyone who has so generously supported and I look forward to keeping you posted with the results.”
In preparation for the half-marathon in March, Tom has assembled a lean, focused, and motivated LogicSource “Team for Cures” to help him in his quest for 13.1 and bringing an end to the devastation of Multiple Myeloma. Tom’s A-Team will be headlined by longtime runner and LogicSource Chief Operating Officer, Jo Seed, while LogicSource “Ironman” and competitive racer, Bill Harkawik will be coaching the company’s resolute runners. Bill’s years of practice, patience, determination, and competitive running experience will guarantee that Tom Kealy and his team will be putting their best foot forward for all 13.1 miles.
Expectations are high. The LogicSource team has been diligently training since the end of 2018, with Tom leading the way. In his quest for the best time, Tom has been running 30-40 mile weekly and surely wearing out a few pairs of sneakers along the way. For Tom, some sweat equity and worn-out shoes are a small price to pay for a cure. But, even those who aren’t running can help support Tom and the mission of MMRF.
